Why I write? With the example of my father before me as I was growing up, it was all I ever wanted, or felt fitted to do. In obedience to a genetic imperative - my father wrote 12 novels in 12 years and dropped dead, my (maternal) grandfather edited the Brockhaus Encyclopaedia. Out of allegiance to certain twentieth-century practitioners, in particular Lowell, Brodsky, Benn and Montale. To bring confusion to my languages, and clarity to myself.
Michael Hofmann
Michael Hofmann wurde in Freiburg 1957 geboren. Er ist der Sohn des Schriftststellers Gert Hofmann, der als DAAD Auslandslektor mit seiner Familie 1961 nach Bristol zog, später nach Edinburgh. Michael Hofmann hat Literatur in Cambridge studiert. Seit 1983 lebt er als freier Autor und Übersetzer in London; seit 1993 unterrichtet er ein Semester im Jahr an der University of Florida in Gainesville (ab 2009 volljahrig). Hofmann hatte zwischendurch Gastprofessuren an der University of Michigan, Rutgers University, der New School University, sowie Barnard College, Columbia. Er schreibt Artikel und Besprechungen fur viele Zeitschriften im englischsprachigen Raum, darunter den Guardian (London), die New York Times und Poetry (Chicago).
